About At Ease

Lacawac Sanctuary’s At Ease program is an outdoor education initiative designed specifically for veterans and their families. Rooted in nature-based learning, At Ease offers meaningful experiences that inspire curiosity, build knowledge, and promote overall well-being through hands-on exploration of the natural world.

Led by a retired Army veteran, the program offers enriching opportunities that combine environmental education with creative expression and outdoor skills, encouraging personal enrichment and lifelong learning.

By blending nature education with outdoor experiences, At Ease empowers veterans to learn new skills, explore personal interests, and reconnect with the outdoors in a meaningful, energizing way.
Program Highlights

  • Environmental Education: Through guided hikes, wildlife observation, and field-based activities, participants gain a deeper understanding of natural systems, fostering appreciation for the land and a sense of stewardship.
  • Creative Expression in Nature: Veterans engage in photography, writing, visual arts, and storytelling—all inspired by the natural surroundings. These experiences support reflection, focus, and self-discovery.
  • Nature-Based Wellness Practices: Outdoor yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness walks encourage physical activity and mental clarity while teaching techniques for managing stress in everyday life.
  • Hands-On Outdoor Skills: Activities such as gardening, fishing, and basic wilderness skills promote confidence, encourage teamwork, and offer purposeful engagement with the environment.

Programs and Activities

The Monthly Muster

The Monthly Muster is a dedicated educational discussion forum within Lacawac’s At Ease Program, designed to foster learning, connection, and support for veterans and active military personnel. Each month, the forum features expert-led discussions on topics relevant to military life, wellness, and personal growth.  Topics include mental health strategies, resilience-building, career transition, financial planning, and the healing power of nature. Participants engage in open conversations, share experiences, and gain valuable insights from professionals and peers in a welcoming, supportive environment.

2nd Saturdays at 10:00 am

Warriors on the Trail

Warriors on the Trail is a veteran-led hiking group that unites veterans for powerful outdoor experiences rooted in exploration, connection, and community service. Through guided hikes on trails of all levels, participants immerse themselves in nature, foster camaraderie, and discover new pathways for healing and personal growth.

Each outing offers opportunities to connect with fellow veterans, learn about local ecosystems, and embrace the physical and mental benefits of time spent outdoors. In addition to hiking, the program incorporates elements of trail maintenance and environmental stewardship, encouraging participants to give back to the natural spaces that support their well-being. Activities may include clearing debris, repairing trail surfaces, and preserving native habitats—hands-on actions that deepen participants' sense of purpose and connection to the land.

Open to all experience levels, Warriors on the Trail empowers veterans to stay active, support one another, and play a meaningful role in conserving our shared natural resources—moving forward, together.

Stripes and Strings
Stripes and Strings is a 10-week structured guitar instruction program designed to support veterans and active military members through the healing power of music. Participants receive ten individual lessons with trained instructors, participate in group sessions like jam circles and community music-making, and are provided with a free or low-cost guitar package—including a guitar, bag, and stand. Stripes and Strings fosters renewal, personal growth, and connection, putting the transformative experience of music into the hands of our nation’s heroes.

A Legacy of Service
Lacawac Sanctuary is committed to supporting those who have served through the At Ease program, reflecting on our own history and ties to military service. The Watres family, a prominent part of our history, has notable military backgrounds. Colonel Louis A. Watres, who acquired the property served as a colonel in the National Guard during the Spanish-American War. Additionally, his grandson and founder of Lacawac Sanctuary, Arthur Watres, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Japanese interpreter. For many years the Watres family used Lacawac as both a summer retreat and a home where they connected with the beauty of the land. Inspired by the Watres legacy, we are dedicated to extending this connection with nature and the outdoors to those who have served.
