View the Lodge Floor Plan

The Historic Watres Lodge (c.1903)

Yes, it’s true… the floors creak, the walls are thin, and the sinks still have separate hot and cold knobs—but that’s all part of the charm of staying in a Registered Historic Landmark. Lacawac’s 1903 Great Camp-style Lodge offers a unique and memorable experience—one that invites you to slow down, unplug, and embrace the timeless beauty of a bygone era.

Constructed entirely of southern yellow pine, with local oak used for trim, railings, and exterior columns, the Lodge is a remarkable example of early 20th-century craftsmanship. It boasts 13 distinctive gables, a large open sitting porch overlooking pristine Lake Lacawac, and interior details that tell a story of simple elegance and rustic charm.

Inside, the Lodge features:
  • 9 bedrooms, plus a seasonal sleeping porch
  • 3 bathrooms
  • A spacious kitchen, pantry, and a vintage walk-in ice box
  • A large dining room that comfortably seats 24 guests
  • A breezeway for summer ventilation
  • A cozy parlor with an inglenook fireplace and dramatic double staircase

Other highlights include a “window wall” opening onto the lakefront porch, hatch doors for passing firewood into built-in storage boxes by the hearth, and original built-in oak cabinetry in both the pantry and dining room. While the original stone wash sinks and coal stove are gone, the Lodge retains its authentic character and inviting warmth.

Once adorned with grand porches—partially removed after termite damage—the Lodge continues to offer spectacular views and the perfect setting for relaxing by the lake or gathering with loved ones.

Perfect for family reunions, weddings, corporate retreats, or a peaceful summer weekend with friends, the 1903 Lodge is more than just a place to stay—it’s a living piece of history and a rare opportunity to experience the tranquility and natural splendor of Lacawac Sanctuary.

Ice House Cottage

Step back in time with modern comforts in this charming, historic cabin nestled within the serene setting of Lacawac Sanctuary. Originally built as an ice house, this unique structure has been thoughtfully renovated while preserving its rustic character and heritage.

The first floor offers a warm and inviting open-concept living space, complete with a newly updated kitchen, dining area, and cozy living room centered around a massive stone fireplace—once the cabin’s only source of heat. Upstairs, you'll find three comfortable bedrooms and a fully renovated bathroom. Two of the bedrooms feature queen and full-sized beds, while a third bedroom on the top floor includes another full bed, comfortably sleeping up to six guests.
Surrounded by the quiet beauty of Lake Lacawac, this is the perfect spot for birdwatching, photography, meditating, or simply unwinding in nature. As part of a protected research and conservation area, swimming and fishing are not permitted in Lake Lacawac. However, guests have access to a private beach on nearby Lake Wallenpaupack—just minutes away—for fishing, swimming, and other recreational activities. Kayaks and canoes are welcome, with an on-site boat launch available.

Lacawac Sanctuary, established in 1966, is a 545-acre nature preserve, ecological field research station, and environmental education center located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania.

This cabin’s rich history adds a special dimension to your stay. Once used to store large blocks of ice harvested from the lake during winter, the building was so well insulated that ice could last up to a year without refrigeration. It later served as cold storage for game and featured a built-in crane to transport ice across the yard to the Lodge’s kitchen. In the 1950s, the building was converted into a winter cottage by Arthur and Isabel Watres, with the addition of windows and a second interior floor.

Whether you're here for a quiet weekend escape, a creative retreat, or part of an environmental education program, the A-Frames provide a unique opportunity to unplug and reconnect with nature.
Available seasonally, our A-Frame Cabins combine the spirit of classic outdoor adventure with the serenity of a nature preserve.
