Environmental Educator (Part - Time)

Job Summary:
This position is responsible for managing all aspects of summer day camp.  Also, facilitating and organizing education programs for the public.  This position teach environmental education programs for preK – 12 students in schools and at Lacawac and assist in developing new programming and curriculum.  Other aspects of the position include, outreach to the community and land stewardship.

Reports to: 
Director of Environmental Education

Maximum Hours Per Week:    Varies according to the season

Rate:  $18.00 per hour
 
Duties Include:
The following areas are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required.  This description is subject to modification as the needs and requirements of the position change.

Day Camp
  • Plans and prepares the day camp program.  (adapting current program as needed)
  • Purchases and prepares all materials for day camp
  • Supervises a summer co-counselor and junior counselors
  • Promotes camp to the local community and schools
  • Registers and communicates necessary information to campers/parents
  • Conducts a safe, educational, and fun camp experience for ages 5 – 12
 
 
PreK-12 Education
  • Teaches environmental educational programs, both on-site and offsite to K – 12 students.
  • Maintains and expands upon current educational programs as appropriate.
  • Recommends new programs, including those to be funded through regular operating stream and those requiring grant funding.
  •  Develops and implements recommended programs as approved.
  • Assists with keeping program supplies and materials clean and organized.

Public Programs and Outreach
  • Schedule, advertise, and facilitate programs offered to the public.
  • Participates in occasional outreach events representing Lacawac.
 
Land Stewardship
  • Maintains a comprehensive and updated knowledge of the local habitat, natural history and current Lacawac information in order to lead scheduled nature hike and interpret nature center exhibits inside.
  • Assists with the maintenance and upkeep of Lacawac Sanctuary property. This will include restoration ecology including micro restoration (such as planting trees), labor (such as trail maintenance, clean up, etc.).
 
Experience and Education:  
  • Bachelor’s degree in education and or environmental science preferred
  • Prior experience in relevant field, such as at a school, nature center, museum, arboretum, land trust, zoo, park, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent people skills required · Computer skills required: word processing, presentation, database, etc.
  • Willingness to work Mondays through Fridays, some holidays, weekends, and evenings
  • Ability to work with little supervision and to handle multiple projects is required 
  • Must be adaptable, flexible, and a self-starter 
 
Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent customer services skills
  • Demonstrated competency in oral and written skills
  • Ability to work both as a team member and independently
 
Primary Work Location and Working Conditions:
Outdoors in all types of weather; must be able to walk off trail, lift and carry 40 lbs.
