Usage Policies

The following are basic usage policies for all visitors to Lacawac.

1. Only authorized vehicles are permitted beyond the old stone gates. When working with groups at Lacawac, keep the number of vehicles to a minimum. This will help preserve the natural quality of Lacawac. Speed Limit – 15 mph.

2.  No open fires are allowed at any time.

3.  Lacawac is open during daylight hours only. Camping in the forest by the public is not permitted.

4. Hunting privileges are restricted to members of the Buck Streamers Hunting Club. Hunting is further limited to State Pennsylvania deer season only (October through early January).

5. Please use only trails and gravel roads while traveling through the property to minimize your impact.

6. Always bring plastic trash bags on trips; pack out whatever you pack in as well as any other trash you see. This will: (a) prevent degradation of the forest, (b) foster a sense of good citizenry in students, and (c) project an image of respectful forest use for other visitors.

7. Do not nail, cut, or deface trees. Do not harm any plants or animals.

8. Request permission in advance from the Lacawac’s Director of Research before taking anything from its place at Lacawac (i.e., plants, animals, rocks, artifacts, etc.). Educational use should be nonconsumptive and nondestructive. Only Lacawac staff is in a position to oversee the total amount of sampling that takes place on the land.

9. Keep noise to a minimum. In addition to preserving the natural quality of the Forest, this will increase the chances of seeing wildlife.

10. Students are prohibited from having potentially dangerous equipment in their possession (example: knives, hatchets).

11. Many studies and scientific experiments are being conducted at Lacawac. Please do not disturb any equipment or objects marked with tags. Keep classes out of known study areas.

12. No mountain bikes or horses.

13. All pets must be kept on a leash or otherwise restrained.

14. Assist other Lacawac visitors with both orientation and use rules (i.e., no biking on trails, no fires, etc.) whenever appropriate.

Lacawac Field Station’s Research Guidelines.

All students and staff participating in programs at Lacawac are expected to follow their institution’s policies on alcohol and drug use and abuse.
