Watershed
​Educators Institute

A Week Long Course for 6-12th Grade Teachers

​August 12-16, 2019


Lacawac Sanctuary is pleased to be able offer the Watershed Educators Institute, a week long summer course for teachers in grades 6-12.   The Watershed Educators Institute combines  state recognized curriculum from Stroud Water Research Center and DCNR PA State Parks plus Lacawac Research and Education resources.  This is the first time all multi-state renowned programs are being offered together.

Teachers will receive the following resources:
  1. PA State Parks Watershed Education (WE)
  2. Healthy Water, Healthy People (from Project WET)
  3.  Clean and Conserve (from Project WET)
  4. Model My Watershed (from Stroud Water Research)
  5. MWEE (Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences) Ambassador training
  6. WE Watershed Charts
  7. WE River Basin Maps
  8. Macroinvertebrate Dichotomous Key
  9. A resource list of local professional and partners from various agencies.

Instructors include:
  1. Jamie Reeger, Director of Environmental Education at Lacawac Sanctuary. 
  2. Carissa Longo, Environmental Education Program Coordinator for the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR)- PA Bureau of State Parks. 
  3. Steve Kerlin, Ph.D., Director of Education at Stroud Water Research Center.
  4. Angela Lambert, Environmental Education Specialist, Lackawanna State Park
  5. Beth Norman, Ph. D., Director of Research at Lacawac Sanctuary
  6. Nick Spinelli, Executive Director of the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District
  7. Simeon Suter,  Groundwater & Environmental Geology Supervisor at the Bureau of Topographical and Geological Survey, DCNR

Participating teachers will be actively engaged in authentic outdoor inquiry activities throughout week.  Leading professionals will facilitate active learning experiences, watershed investigations, and opportunities for reflection and journaling.    As part of the course, teachers will become MWEE ambassadors and will be required to create a solid plan that connects a MWEE to their curriculum.

at the pristine Lacawac Sanctuary which encompasses glacial Lake Lacawac, a National Natural Landmark, and its watershed. A variety of ecosystems and trails provide ideal opportunities for deep and meaningful learning.

Network with Watershed Professionals

from around the state. Work with scientists, historians and educators who work with local issues to preserve and protect our watersheds.

Have Fun and Get Outdoors!

WEI is like camp for teachers: You’ll be immersed in nature, collect water samples, paddle waterways, reflect and journal on the dock, and much more!

Fee:  $100
  Includes:
  • 50 Act 48 hours​
  • All meals catered by the Mustard Seed, a local farm to table business
  • All resources listed above

Fee for Lodging:
  • Shared rooms - $25/night
  • Single rooms - $50/night​
  • Available 8/11 - 8/15, 2019

Lodging - Watres Lodge

The historic Watres Lodge has 8 sleeping rooms, a meeting room/living room, kitchen, dining room and three restrooms with showers (overnight capacity up to 17-19). Four rooms have full beds,three rooms have two sets of bunk beds, and one room has 2 single beds.  There are three bunk beds located on an enclosed outdoor sleeping porch.  Preferences are given for accomodations as much as possible.  Please contact Lacawac for alternate lodging and prices.
