Winter Wonders Nature Day Camps

About Camp at Lacawac Sanctuary:
Lacawac’s 550-acre field station has meandering trails, open fields, lakes and wetlands in which to explore. Experience nature through hands-on activities, artistic expression, thematic games, scientific experiments, and environmental observation. Campers will be fully immersed in our living laboratory and discover how they fit into the complex web of our diverse ecosystem. Lacawac stands true to its mission of research, education and preservation by shaping the next generation of scientists and environmental stewards.

Camp Staff:
  • Counselors have many years of experience working with children and teaching environmental education.
  • All counselors, junior counselors, and interns have obtained child abuse and criminal history checks.
  • A counselor to camper ratio of 1:8 is maintained.
  • Counselors’ are trained in first aid and CPR.
  • Counselors know that exploring nature is the most effective way to instill a sense of wonder and love for the environment.

Pricing:  Enrollment is on a first-come first-serve basis. You can register for each camp separately $30.00 or take advantage of a $10 discount by signing up for all three camps at once (discount will be applied after registration as a refund to your card).

Winter Survival Camp 

Embrace the beauty and challenges of winter with our Winter Survival Camp. This immersive and educational program is designated for adventurers who seek to learn essential winter survival skills while fostering teamwork, problem-solving abilities, leadership, and confidence. 
  • Winter Survival skills: Campers will master the basics of winter survival, including shelter building, fire-making, and other essential techniques to thrive in the cold. 
  • Team Building: Through a variety of non-competitive games and activities, campers will develop strong team-building skills, learn to work together effectively, and appreciate the power of collaboration. 
  • Outdoor Recreation: Campers will enjoy outdoor winter recreation on a whole new level. From winter nature hikes to snowball fights, the camp offers a wide range of fun activities. ​

Wild Tracks and Signs Camp 

Our wild track and signs camp is designed to provide young nature enthusiasts with unique opportunities to connect with the natural world, learn about animals that call the sanctuary their home, and understand the signs they leave behind. 

  • Animal Exploration: Campers will embark on a fascinating journey to discover the diverse wildlife inhabiting Lacawac Sanctuary, from resident animals to migratory species. 
  • Track and Sign Identification: Through hands-on experiences, campers will learn how to identify tracks, scat, and other signs that animals leave behind. They will become nature detectives, uncovering the secrets of the forest.
  • Understanding Winter Habitats: Our young naturalist will gain valuable insights into how animals adapt to winter conditions, including their winter shelters and behaviors.

Frosty Foliage Art Camp 

Embrace the magic and art of the winter season. Our camp offers an immersive experience where you'll discover the hidden wonders of the Winter landscape and create meaningful winter artwork.

  • ​Ice-Covered Bark and Buds: Delve into the world of plant skeletons that remain after the first frost. Learn to appreciate the intricate structures and patterns left behind and use them as inspiration for artwork. 
  • Winter Ice Sculptures: Harness the power of snow and ice to craft your own winter ice sculptures. Learn the art of shaping frozen water into stunning creations. 
  • Winter Art: immerse yourself in the world of winter art, from painting snowy landscapes to crafting intricate snowflake designs. Explore various artistic techniques and styles to express the beauty of the season.   ​
