PLEON Workshops
PLEON conducts free workshops focusing on lake ecology and management. Workshops feature scientists working at the forefront of lake ecology and facilitate interactions and collaborations among lake scientists, landowners, and the public. Workshops cover topics such as basic lake ecology, sampling methods and equipment, as well as common management challenges in the Poconos.
Have an idea for a workshop topic? We would love to hear from you! Contact Beth Norman (beth.norman@lacawac.org)

2022 PLEON Summer Workshop Series
PLEON is continuing to serve Pocono lake communities during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing virtual and in-person workshops. Masking may be required at PLEON events.
The PLEON 2022 Summer Workshop Series has been reimagined as a weekend-long celebration of lakes.
Join us for a series of hands-on activities focused on exploring, learning about, and enjoying lakes! All events will be held at Lacawac Sanctuary and will be lead by lake scientists.
Register for each of the events below. Registration is required for Lunch with a Scientist and Paddle on Lake Lacawac and is appreciated for the workshops.

LAKE APPRECIATION DAYS: PADDLE ON LAKE LACAWAC
Sunday, July 17, 2:00 pm
Lake Lacawac is Lacawac Sanctuary's pristine glacial lake and the site of cutting-edge aquatic research. Enjoy a quiet afternoon exploring this National Natural Landmark in canoes or small row boats (provided). Dr. Jonathan Stetler of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will introduce the natural history of the lake, interesting ecological features, and show you how to make and use a DYI Secchi disk to measure water clarity (materials provided).
$10 per person
Space is limited and registration is required
The paddle is funded in part by the Pennsylvania Recreation & Park Society and a grant from the Environmental Stewardship Fund under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.

LAKE APPRECIATION DAYS: WORKSHOPS
We are offering three hands-on opportunities to learn about lakes and lake organisms! Workshops are led by expert lake scientists and are appropriate for most age groups.
These workshops are free.
You can register for all three workshops using the same form using the button below.
Workshop descriptions are below...please note the time and date of each workshop carefully.

HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS: A PRIMER
Saturday, July 16th, 9:30-11:30 am
Lauren Knose, Miami University of Ohio, Dr. Sarah Princiotta, Penn State Schuylkill, Dr. Kristin Strock, Dickinson College
Harmful algal blooms, or HABs, are an emerging threat to lakes in Pennsylvania and to the health and economic viability of lake communities. This workshop will discuss the ecology of harmful algae, factors that can lead to blooms, challenges and best practices for detecting blooms and algal toxins, and actions communities can take to prevent and respond to HABs in their lakes. Participants will also use microscopes to view algae and have the opportunity to try commercially available toxin test kits. This workshop will be led by Lauren Adkins Knose, a PhD candidate from Miami University of Ohio specializing in HAB dynamics and will feature Drs. Sarah Princiotta and Kristin Strock, both of whom are researching HABs in Pennsylvania.
LAKE INSECTS: "BUGS" WHO SHARE YOUR LAKE
Saturday, July 16th, 2:00-4:00 pm
Erika Bilger, Millikin University
Many species of insects and other invertebrates complete at least part of their life cycle in lakes. Although often overlooked, these animals form an important part of the lake food web and are vital to a healthy lake. In this workshop, participants will explore the diversity of aquatic insects in the lakes of Northeastern Pennsylvania with Erika Bilger, an entomologist at Millikin University. This is a hands-on, field-based experience where participants will collect insects from different lake and pond habitats, view live specimens using microscopes, and learn basic insect identification.
This is a hands-on, possibly feet-wet program...participants are encouraged to bring calf-high rubber boots.
ECOLOGY OF AQUATIC PLANTS
Sunday, July 17th, 9:00-11:30 am
Dr. Elizabeth Carroll, Holy Family University
Aquatic plants are some of the most visible components of lake ecosystems. Invasive aquatic plants pose significant management challenges in many lakes. Participants of this workshop will learn what makes aquatic plants unique, their role in lake ecosystems, and how to identify common native and invasive species. They will also learn how to survey aquatic plants in their own lakes by helping to conduct a lake-wide survey of the aquatic plants in Lake Lacawac and Heron Pond. Participants will also be invited to bring plant samples from their own lakes to be identified during the workshop and to continue to send samples to PLEON for free identification following the event. This workshop will be led by Dr. Elizabeth Carroll, a professor at Holy Family University and an expert in aquatic plant ecology and identification.
This is a hands-on program with the option of rowing on the lake in our boats!
