Honesdale, PA – Lewis J Critelli, President and Chief Executive Officer of Wayne Bank, is pleased to announce that the Bank will support the Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation with a donation through the Educational Improvement Organization Program in 2018.

Lacawac Sanctuary President, Craig Lukatch-Setser, accepted a check in the amount of $4,000.00 from Mr. Critelli.
The gift was made possible as a result of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program offered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, acting through the Department of Community and Economic Development.

“Wayne Bank is proud to provide support to the Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation through the EITC program this year,” stated Mr. Critelli.  “The sanctuary is one of our community’s most beautiful natural areas and we are so pleased that this contribution will support their valuable environmental education program for local students.”

This contribution will benefit Lacawac Sanctuary’s Youth Engaging Science (YES) program by providing opportunities for students, in kindergarten through twelfth grade, to participate in hand-on environmental programs both in and out of school.  The YES program allows students to explore collegiate pathways and careers in environmental education, including ecology and environmental fields, by offering first-hand experiences and connections with professionals.  The YES program also supports opportunities for students to participate in environmental education projects and experiences.  Much of Lacawac’s YES program focuses on low and moderate income, rural, and other populations that are traditionally underserved or underrepresented.  The program serves youth throughout a multi-county region of Northeastern Pennsylvania and, in 2017, supported over 2,500 local students.

Wayne Bank is a subsidiary of Norwood Financial Corp., Member FDIC, and is located in Honesdale, Pennsylvania.  The Bank has 26 Community Offices serving Wayne, Pike, Monroe, and Lackawanna Counties in Pennsylvania, along with Delaware and Sullivan Counties in New York State.  The stock trades on the NASDAQ Global Market under the symbol— NWFL.

Lacawac Awards Moeller Grants

2/5/2018

Lake Ariel, PA – Lacawac recently awarded two grants to scientists conducting research at Lacawac Sanctuary Field Station.  The Robert Estabrook Moeller Memorial Awards were awarded to Dr. Elise Heiss, King’s College and Rachel Pilla, Miami University of Ohio.

Dr. Heiss, a chemistry professor at King’s College, has been awarded a $2,000 grant for her research on NITROGEN CYCLING IN LAKE LACAWAC:  INVESTIGATING ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS ON WATER COLUMN NITRIFICATION.  Ms. Pilla, a PhD student at Miami has also been awarded a $2,000 grant for her research entitled: Mapping the Metabolic Landscape for Threatened Zooplankton Taxa in Lakes.

Dr. Robert E. Moeller, a long-time friend and supporter of the Lacawac Sanctuary passed away in late May 2011 at the age of 62. Robert was a limnologist, a researcher who studied the structure and function of lakes and the organisms that live in them. He was always generous in giving his time to help students and colleagues with their research. Robert’s love of limnology and devotion to research led his work to be the centerpiece of his life. His breadth of understanding in limnology was impressive and ranged from aquatic botany and paleolimnology to the contemporary ecology of phytoplankton and zooplankton. His focus in more recent years was on the ecology of ultraviolet radiation and its effects on zooplankton-phytoplankton interactions.

Robert’s generosity extended to his establishing an endowed fund which will support Robert Estabrook Moeller Research Fellow awards to college and university students and faculty to do limnological research on Lake Lacawac and other Pocono region lakes.

Lacawac Sanctuary is a biological field station and environmental education center located on the shore of Lake Wallenpaupack.  The station has been conducting scientific research and educating the public since 1966.  More information on Lacawac can be found at lacawac.org.
